Sylhet is hot and humid — a combination that ordinary fans struggle with and that makes poorly designed homes feel like greenhouses. But the people of Sylhet built comfortable homes for generations before air conditioning existed. The secret isn’t a bigger AC unit; it’s passive cooling design — shaping a building so the climate does the work for free.

Here’s the complete design playbook for keeping a Sylhet home naturally cool.


Understand the Enemy: It’s Not the Heat, It’s the Humidity

In Sylhet the dry-bulb temperature may only hit the mid-30s, but the relative humidity routinely exceeds 80%. High humidity stops sweat from evaporating, which is your body’s only cooling mechanism. So the goal isn’t just lowering temperature — it’s moving air to keep evaporation working, and blocking radiant heat before it enters the building.

Two governing rules follow:

1. Orientation — Get the Axis Right

The cheapest cooling design decision you’ll ever make happens on paper, before a single brick is laid.

  • Long axis east–west: Face the building’s long sides (and most windows) north and south. This minimises the harsh early-morning and late-afternoon low-angle sun on the east and west walls.
  • Minimise west glazing: The western elevation gets the worst sun of the day. Keep windows small there, or shade them well.
  • Prevailing breeze: Sylhet’s wind comes mainly from the south in the hot season. Orient the main openings to catch it.

2. Maximise Cross-Ventilation

Cross-ventilation is the single most powerful natural-cooling tool in a humid climate.

  • High and low openings: Let cooler air in low and hot air out high (the “stack effect”), driving a steady upward current even on still days.
  • Wing walls: Small wall projections beside a window can actually suck air through a room by creating a pressure difference — a classic trick in tropical design.
  • Jalousie and louvred windows: They let a full-width slat of air sweep through and can be adjusted, while still shedding monsoon rain.

3. Deep Shade and Overhangs

In a humid climate, shading is more useful than thick insulation. Keep the sun off the building shell.

  • Deep eaves and wide verandas: The classic Sylhet tin-roof home works because its deep overhang keeps walls and windows in shade. Recreate that with generous roof projections of 600–900 mm.
  • East/west shading devices: Sun-tracking awnings, pergolas or climbing plants on the east and west masonry block the worst low-angle sun.
  • Trees and plantings: Deciduous trees on the west, evergreen on the east. Shade is free and it cools the air around the house before it reaches you.
  • Reflective exterior: Light-coloured, or heat-reflective painted, walls bounce solar energy away instead of absorbing it.

4. Design the Roof for Cooling

The roof takes the most sun and is the biggest single source of radiant heat. Sylhet’s hot-match-with-monsoon roof needs a dual personality.

  • Pitched plus vented ridge: A pitched roof (which you want for the rain anyway) creates a hot air space under it. Vent that space at the ridge so hot air escapes instead of baking the ceiling below.
  • Ventilated void: Don’t let the (hot) roof touch the (living) ceiling. Leave a ventilated attic air gap with louvres at both ends.
  • Reflective roof covering: White tile, cool-roof coating, or reflective sheeting on a tin roof dramatically cuts top-of-house heat.
  • Ceiling insulation only if reflected first: Insulation (fibre-cement board, foil) helps most after you’ve already reflected and vented — stack them.

5. Courtyards and the Stack Effect

A courtyard or lightwell in the middle of the house is old tropical wisdom that still works.

  • Cool air settles in the shaded courtyard at night.
  • Hot air inside rooms rises and exits through high openings.
  • Surrounding rooms are ventilated on the courtyard side too, giving each room two faces of fresh air.

6. Material and Colour Choices for Comfort

Materials do double duty for cooling when chosen with restraint.

  • Thermal mass (brick/RCC): Good — it absorbs daytime heat and releases it at night. But it only helps if a ventilated air gap separates it from you. Avoid massive, unventilated mass that bakes overnight.
  • Light, reflective finishes: White or pale exterior walls reflect sun instead of storing it.
  • Cool floors: Bare terrazzo and ceramic tile stay cooler underfoot than carpet or dark wood.
  • Avoid dark tin roofs uncovered: A bare dark CGI sheet is a radiator aimed at your ceiling. Reflect, vent, or insulate it.

That’s the design that keeps Sylhet’s humid heat from winning.
